CHARISMATIC PRAYER GROUP
WHAT IS A CHARISMATIC PRAYER MEETING?
A Charismatic Prayer Meeting is a time of coming together for praise
and worship of God through hymns, prayer, and scripture using the charisms
of the Holy Spirit that Paul details in 1 Cor. 12. There is also a time of
sharing the "good news" of how God is working in our lives on a daily basis
and also a time of petition when we ask God to continue to bless us.
God inhabits the praise of his people and as we praise and worship Him,
his presence gets stronger. We can sense that He is truly with us.
It is in his presence that the Holy Spirit reveals his love and healing.
Jesus promised us that He would send the Holy Spirit to empower us to finish
his work. After the Resurrection, Jesus told the Apostles to wait for the
coming of the Spirit. Then they would receive power to bring the Gospel
message of healing and wholeness to his people. Today that same Holy Spirit
has been given to us in Baptism and Confirmation, but we must allow that power
to come alive in each of us.
Our Catholic Catechism teaches us that the, "Charisms (gifts of the Holy Spirit)
are to be accepted with gratitude by the person who receives them and by all
members of the Church as well. They are a wonderfully rich grace for the
apostolic vitality and for the holiness of the entire Body of Christ, …..(Cat. Sect. 800)
Pope John Paul II in 1998 said "The renewal in the Spirit can be considered
a special gift of the Spirit to the Church in our time...In a special way
continue to love and spread love for the prayer of praise. The form of prayer
that recognizes most immediately that God is God"
The U.S. Catholic Bishops wrote "We encourage the whole Church to look into and
embrace baptism in the Holy Spirit as the power of personal and communal
transformation with all the graces needed for the upbuilding of the Church
and for our mission in the world." (Grace for the New Springtime - 1997)
