In Catholic tradition, a Jubilee is a special year of grace and celebration, often marked by spiritual renewal, pilgrimages, forgiveness of sins, and indulgences. Its roots trace back to the Old Testament, where the Jubilee year (every 50 years) was a time of rest, freedom for slaves, and restoration of property.
The Catholic Church adapted this concept into its own practice, beginning in 1300 under Pope Boniface VIII. Modern Jubilees occur roughly every 25 years or during extraordinary circumstances, such as the Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis in 2015-2016.
